Planning for Establishment of a Wind Erosion Monitoring & Measurement Station within RFLDL Project Pilot Site of South Khorasan, Sarayan

Regarding the consultation done for the establishment of the 2nd wind erosion monitoring station of the country within RFLDL project pilot site of South Khorasan, Sarayan, initial planning for achieving this objective was started in Jan. 2015. In this light the Provincial Office of the project in Birjand organized a 3 days project site visit of Mr. Azim zadeh & Tahmasbi, the academic member & Head of research institute for arid & desert regions of Yazd University & Head of research group of DAB respectively, in close collaboration with DAB. The main objectives of the visit are to increase awareness of project executive managers & experts and the experts of natural resources management offices of the province on the importance and necessity for monitoring and measuring wing erosion, introducing the available methods and mechanisms, sharing the successful experiences attained from establishment of the 1st wind erosion monitoring station of the country, set up within Rigan, Kerman province, another pilot site of the project, and finally conducting primary review and assessment along with field visits to the targeted areas of the project for positioning an appropriate location for establishment of the station within agricultural lands.

To achieve the planning objectives for the visit a training workshop on wind erosion was hosted on Sat, 3 Jan. 2015 by General Office of Natural Resources Management of South Khorasan and attended by Deputy of NPM, a group of District Head & experts of natural resources offices as well as PPM & project staffs. Since the main objective of the training workshop is to familiarize the participants with the achievements of wind erosion monitoring station established in Rigan site as a successful sample for modeling in sarayan site, relevant topics to the planning objective such as the required criteria for site selection, needed equipment for establishment of the station, introduction of sediment retention traps, the role and efficiency of each of the traps, their arrangement pattern, local collection & data analysis mechanisms and utilized software are presented to the participants.

Two days project field visits for positioning an appropriate location for establishment of the station within project pilot site were conducted from Sunday 4 Jan. 2015 to Monday, 5 Jan. 2015.

Eventually, several review meetings and identification of challenges, weak and strong points of the places visited for establishment of the station resulted in the establishment of the station within agricultural lands due to the main challenges existed in the area for limitation of agriculture activities and low yield production. Therefore following joint & consultation meetings with district Office of Agriculture, the authorities of meteorological station and local key people and framers of the area, it was decided to establish the station within a 2 ha. agricultural land located in the south of Se Qaleh.

RFLDLP Introduction

Rehabilitation of Forest Landscapes and Degraded Land Project (RFLDLP) is a collaborative effort of Forest, Rangeland and Watershed Management Organization of the Government of Islamic Republic of Iran/ (IRI/ FRWO), Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to address the main threats to land and forest resources in arid and semi-arid areas of IRI. The Project has national and international significance as it helps government and GEF to fulfill their strategic objectives. The project helps government to fulfill its constitutional obligations and international environmental commitments as well as contributes to achieve some of the key development objectives such as the sustainable management of dry land natural resources and improving livelihood conditions of the people living in arid and semi-arid areas. Similarly, the project addresses GEF's Strategic Objectives of Land Degradation & Biodiversity. Through its focus on rehabilitation of forest landscapes, the project will also contribute to GEF’s crosscutting program on Sustainable Forest Management.

The duration of the project is for 5 years (2011-2016& has been designed to implement in two target sites of Sarayan and Rigan with the total area of 462068 ha.Konarbai sub watershed of AbBarik watershed in Rigan, Kerman and Hamboo sub-watershed of Se Qaleh watershed in Sarayan, South Khorasan province with the total area of 298500 & 163568 ha. which are representative of typical arid and semi-arid regions of Iran have been selected as project pilot sites to demonstrate effective participatory and integrated sustainable land and forest management (SLFM) practices.

The primary stakeholders and immediate target beneficiaries of the project are the local people and communities living in the project watersheds and the local and provincial level governments. They will benefit from increased capacity to plan, implement and evaluate participatory integrated SLFM initiatives at village and watershed levels.  Local stakeholders, including both women and men, who will be principal participants in the planning and execution of the various activities, bring with them their traditional, time tested and practical suggestions to address the challenges of land degradation, deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

The project aims to restore and enhance biodiversity and the capacity of degraded forest landscapes and lands to deliver essential ecosystem goods and services for sustainable livelihoods, food security and combating desertification by removing barriers to participatory integrated SLFM initiatives at watershed level in Rigan and Sarayanpilot sites.
