Ms. Nora Berrahmouni, the Lead Technical Officer of FAO, Rome in the presence of the enthusiastic People of Bostagh village:"undoubtedly, one of the achievements of RFLDL Project during this short time of its implementation is the successful mobilization of local communities, which I saw an obvious example of this Success in Bostagh village.

Ms. Nora Berrahmouni, the Lead Technical Officer of FAO, Rome:  One of the key objectives of the RFLDL project is to achieve sustainable development in the Project pilot sites. Undoubtedly, regarding the active participation of people of Bostaq Village, the sustainability of project activities would be continued after the end of the Project for future generation in this village."

Mr. Ali Nabizadeh, District Governor, Sarayan: "RFLDL Project achievements in the 1st year of its implementation can be considered as an epic and new evolution in the sustainable development of the area, so continuous support and cooperation of the authorities & FAO are critical for more success of the project."

Mr. Ali Shabani, district sub-governor, Se Qaleh:" Every project that belongs to people, for their development and people believe it and has full involvement and participation in its implementation, would be undoubtedly successful."

Mr. Habiballah Sharifi, GD, NRWMO, South Khorasan:" Hope more success of the project and a great revolution and change in the livelihood status of local communities of this area can be achieved through the implementation of project future programs."

Mr. Mohsen Yousefi, Project Provincial Manager, South Khorasan: "The membership of RFLDL Project in the official council of Sarayan Township can be considered as a good opportunity to familiarize the project stakeholders with the project progress, and challenges as well as transfer experiences for better planning of the project programs in the light of the development of the area. Also continuous support to the project from the governmental authorities can play an important role to advance the Project future programs."

Dr. Parviz Garshasbi, Watershed Management Deputy of FRWO: "The RFLDL Project progress in South Khorasan Pilot Site is a matter satisfaction, since during a short period great success was achieved. There is an integrated approach in this Project and besides the rehabilitation of natural resources, enhancing the awareness and capacity of local communities and improving their livelihood status are the key objectives of the project and to achieve all these objectives we need to apply local or native knowledge, enhance it and also have good cooperation of all agencies in the light of project objectives and programs along with the efforts of project team."

Dr. Parviz Garshasbi, Watershed Management Deputy of FRWO:" The conservation of natural resources is the duty of all agencies. As in this Project, integrated management planning should be followed in instead of sectoral management. Natural resources belong to all generations and cooperation of authorities will complement the participation of people in the implementation of project activities."

Mr. Abbas Kargar, GD of DAB & NPD:  "RFLDL Project belongs to the nation of Islamic Republic of Iran and FRWO is just a representative of the nation in the project, so authorities of all agencies should consider themselves as the executive partners of the project and participate in the implementation of its activities.

Ms. Nora Berrahmouni, the Lead Technical Officer of FAO, Rome ". One of the key objectives of the project is the full participation of local communities in all project components that I saw a successful example of this valuable objective in Bostagh village.

The feedback and assessment of Ms. Nora Berrahmouni, the Lead Technical Officer of FAO, Rome  on the Project Progress in South Khorasan Province : "What I saw on the ground was excellent, but more important is the especial attention of the project to the degradation causes and alternative livelihood and more important than these two cases is the tool applied for creation of such micro income generation activities as a step toward the improvement of people's livelihood, and that valuable tool is the SCDF." All I saw in the field from the mobilization of local communities, progress of the formation of VRMDCs & SCDFs, rehabilitation activities etc. could not be achieved unless the enhancement of people's awareness, capacity building and empowerment of them. The project management achieved all these successes through organizing series of training workshops, and meetings"

Mr. Mohammad Taheri, the President of Bostagh VRMDC:" Now we consider the social capital which is the people as the most valuable capital of Bostagh VRMDC Due to this belief, we have the active participation of people of Bostagh in the village developmental activities, and the involvement of people in plantation activity is a good example of people's participation in the project programs".

RFLDLP Introduction

Rehabilitation of Forest Landscapes and Degraded Land Project (RFLDLP) is a collaborative effort of Forest, Rangeland and Watershed Management Organization of the Government of Islamic Republic of Iran/ (IRI/ FRWO), Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to address the main threats to land and forest resources in arid and semi-arid areas of IRI. The Project has national and international significance as it helps government and GEF to fulfill their strategic objectives. The project helps government to fulfill its constitutional obligations and international environmental commitments as well as contributes to achieve some of the key development objectives such as the sustainable management of dry land natural resources and improving livelihood conditions of the people living in arid and semi-arid areas. Similarly, the project addresses GEF's Strategic Objectives of Land Degradation & Biodiversity. Through its focus on rehabilitation of forest landscapes, the project will also contribute to GEF’s crosscutting program on Sustainable Forest Management.

The duration of the project is for 5 years (2011-2016& has been designed to implement in two target sites of Sarayan and Rigan with the total area of 462068 ha.Konarbai sub watershed of AbBarik watershed in Rigan, Kerman and Hamboo sub-watershed of Se Qaleh watershed in Sarayan, South Khorasan province with the total area of 298500 & 163568 ha. which are representative of typical arid and semi-arid regions of Iran have been selected as project pilot sites to demonstrate effective participatory and integrated sustainable land and forest management (SLFM) practices.

The primary stakeholders and immediate target beneficiaries of the project are the local people and communities living in the project watersheds and the local and provincial level governments. They will benefit from increased capacity to plan, implement and evaluate participatory integrated SLFM initiatives at village and watershed levels.  Local stakeholders, including both women and men, who will be principal participants in the planning and execution of the various activities, bring with them their traditional, time tested and practical suggestions to address the challenges of land degradation, deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

The project aims to restore and enhance biodiversity and the capacity of degraded forest landscapes and lands to deliver essential ecosystem goods and services for sustainable livelihoods, food security and combating desertification by removing barriers to participatory integrated SLFM initiatives at watershed level in Rigan and Sarayanpilot sites.
